Man killed in police-involved shooting in St. Augustine identified

ST AUGUSTINE, Fla. — UPDATE WEDNESDAY 1:55 p.m. -

The man killed has been identified as Dustin James Acosta, 28, of St. Augustine.

The cause of death has been deemed a homicide, and ruled death by a gunshot.

The officer and deputy involved have also been identified as SGT Kevin Carroll (SAPD) and Deputy Kristapher James (SJSO).

This is the first officer involved shooting for both officers.

Per normal procedure, they are on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

UPDATE WEDNESDAY, 5:26 a.m. - A call for help for an intoxicated man is what led to a man being killed by law enforcement in St. Johns County. The St. Augustine Police Department and The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call.

The sheriff’s office says a man tried driving drunk from a home on Masters Drive.

They say when people tried to stop him, he pulled out a gun.

When a police officer and deputy arrived, they say the man met them at the door and there was a confrontation.

That led to both law enforcement officers firing their guns.

Today we are expecting to learn the identity of that person killed. An autopsy is also scheduled today.

The names of the officers involved is expected to be released this morning. Neither was hurt in the shooting.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The St. Augustine Police Department is investigating an “officer-involved” shooting in the 1500 block of Master Drive Tuesday night.

According to St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office public information officer, a St. Augustine officer and a St. Johns County deputy responded to Masters Drive in regards to an intoxicated individual.

The PIO did not say what lead up to the event but the individual was shot. The individual died at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing. It isn’t clear who shot the individual.

Police are asking people to avoid the area.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting.

According to SJSO, a drunk man was at a home on Masters Drive. The man tried to leave the home and others tried to stop him from getting behind the wheel. Police say the situation resulted in the man getting ahold of a gun. A call to 911 was made around 9:15 p.m.

There was an exchange of contact and a St. Augustine police officer and St. Johns County deputy fired on the man and killed him. It is unknown which bullet struck at this time.

St. Augustine is investigating the situation.

SJSO said the names of officers and deputies will be released tomorrow.
