JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville is now taking steps to stop illegal car services from operating. Two companies are under fire, Uber X and Lyft.
Leaders are worried that dangerous people could exploit the service.
Local taxi and limo drivers asked city leaders when enough is enough. They say they're tired of losing business to companies that aren't following city rules. Councilman Robin Lumb claims Uber X and
Lyft are using drivers who haven't passed required background checks and don't have the right city permits to pick up people who order the so-called black car services.
Lumb said that wasn't the deal the city had with the companies when it relaxed the law last year.
"Drivers have not passed checks. Cars aren't insured and may not be safe," Lumb said. The local cab and limo service companies say the city is dragging its feet and something needs to be changed soon before someone gets hurt.
The city is now working on new legislation but has not set a date on when it will be filed.
