Texas man kills self after shooting Ocala couple

OCALA, Fla. — A 23-year-old man drove from Texas to Florida, shot and killed a man and injured his wife on Christmas Day.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office in investigating the death of Richard Hutson and the injury of Mary Lou Hutson.

Reports say Preston Daniel Pollard shot and killed Richard and injured Mary Lou Hutson at 6069 SW 131st Lane in Ocala.

The vehicle Pollard was driving had the clothes that witnesses described he was wearing during the incident. A .22 caliber handgun that was used to shoot the victims and two boxes of ammunition were also found in Pollard’s vehicle.

Pollard bought the handgun in Texas on Dec. 21, and left Texas on Dec. 23. He arrived in Florida on Dec. 24.

Police believe the case stems from an estranged relationship between Pollard and Rose Courter, 18, who lives in the home. Pollard recently made threats against Courter and her family, according to detectives. The threats were not reported to law enforcement.

Police reports say Courter and three children were in the home at the time of the shooting.

Pollard shot himself while driving after being spotted by authorities, according The Associated Press.

Mary Lou Houston is still in critical condition. The investigation is still ongoing.
