‘This isn’t the place’: Residents concerned after police chase 911 call pings to their street

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — We’re hearing from residents of the neighborhood where Friday’s dramatic car chase began.

Action News Jax first told you about the chase and subsequent shootout Friday afternoon, which left two suspects dead and a JSO K9 in critical condition.

Police said this whole episode started after they received reports of gunfire in the area of Commonwealth Avenue and Division Street around 2 p.m.

That area is on the Westside, just southwest of Edward Waters University.

We spoke with residents in the area who said the area is relatively quiet, but admit that gunshots sometimes disrupt the peace.

“Overall, it’s a decent neighborhood,” resident Ryan Evans said.

Evans said his neighborhood is pretty quiet, but a call to the police on Friday proved that is not always the case.

Police said they got the 911 call about gunfire, which led to a pursuit when JSO identified the suspect vehicle on West 45th Street.

Police said there was gunfire exchanged between them and three suspects.

The pursuit ended at Zoo Parkway and Busch Drive when the suspects hit another vehicle and crashed.

Two suspects inside the vehicle died and a K9 was shot during the final exchange.

On Monday, Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry posted a letter on Twitter. He addressed K9 Huk and his handler, expressing his gratitude for their roles in the pursuit. He also wished Huk a speedy recovery as he recovers from three gunshot wounds.

Back at the starting point, Evans said he didn’t see or hear anything that afternoon, but acknowledged gunfire is a familiar sound around here.

“They said a few years ago it was really bad. Some Uber drivers wouldn’t even come through here, that they would cancel their Uber to not even pick someone up here,” Evans said.

Evans said he isn’t shocked that people are firing guns in Jacksonville, but he didn’t expect it right in his own neighborhood.

“It does surprise me that people are shooting in a neighborhood though. Like, there’s a place and time to do that. This isn’t the place to do that,” Evans said.

None of the suspects have been identified, so their ties to the neighborhood are currently unknown.
