JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —
The United Way of Northeast Florida here in Jacksonville has received its biggest donation in history: $20,000,000 from MacKenzie Scott, a philanthropist and former wife to Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.
The United Way of Northeast Florida tells Action News Jax, the current need of support in the community is tremendous; 40% of people can’t meet their basic needs right now.
The organization reports a 400% increase of food and rent assistance.
Scott’s donation wasn’t the only one recently given to the United Way of Northeast Florida: Miller Electric recently donated $1,000,000 to support race, equity and social justice work.
It plans to conduct a community needs survey in January, where it will ask the community for feedback on what resources people need following the pandemic.
