Weeklong undercover operation shuts down drug house in Nassau County

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — A weeklong undercover operation shut down an alleged drug house in a local neighborhood.

Parents and other neighbors said they are in shock that this could happen so close to where they live.

“It’s pretty shocking, when you have something like that going on right next-door,” Sean Music said.

He explained that he always knew something was a little off with his next door neighbor, but did not expect to find out this.

“You find out there’s people right next-door-- you know-- doing meth and all kinds of drugs and stuff yeah so it’s pretty disheartening," Music said.

Nassau County Sheriff’s Office arrested 36-year-old Michael Potts, on Monday, for allegedly selling meth, cocaine and marijuana out of his home on Owen Road in Fernandina Beach.

When deputies showed up at his place of work to serve their warrant, he ran.

The arrest report said deputies needed to use a stun gun to detain him. He is also charged with illegal possession of a firearm and resisting arrest.

Action News Jax, Meghan Moriarty, went out to the home, on Tuesday.

She spoke with neighbors who said they frequently saw different people coming in and out of the house, stumbling down the driveway.

There is now a chain locking the wooden gate to the entrance of the home.

We spoke with one mother, off camera, who said it’s worrisome to have drugs in the area, especially as she has a 6-year-old daughter.

Another neighbor driving by, said he knew something was up and is glad to see justice served.

“Sad. It’s just really sad that it’s right here.” Kevin Henderson said. “I’m just glad they caught them.”

Following the arrest, the Nassau County sheriff put up a sign outside the home that reads: “This drug house, closed for business.”

“There’s kids that live around there so certainly it’s not something you want to see people coming in the neighborhood purchasing drugs.” Sheriff Bill Leeper explained, stating that he wants to send a message that drugs are not welcome in Nassau.

“Those that are hooked on these drugs, we hope they get the help they need.” Sheriff Leeper said. “Those that are selling, they need to be in jail.”
