Woman bitten by shark at South Cocoa Beach

COCOA BEACH, Fla. — A woman was bitten by a shark Sunday afternoon at South Cocoa Beach, according to Brevard Ocean Rescue officials.

The 28-year-old woman was wading in the surf near South 11th Street when a shark bit her ankle, officials said.

Officials said the woman suffered a 6-inch laceration to her ankle. They said she was probably attacked by a 3- to 5-foot shark.

Visitor Holly Peterson was near the woman when the shark struck.

"I looked over at her and she said, 'Somebody help me.' I saw the fin come up and slap her in the face. She said, 'It got me.' So I grabbed her hand and dragged her back to the shore," Peterson said.

The woman was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center.
