Schumer heard talking about Trump on hot mic: ‘He likes us. He likes me anyway.'

It could have been worse.

But when Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) was caught on a hot mic - live on C-SPAN - talking about Donald Trump, he seemed to be delighted about his current relationship with his longtime acquaintance, the president.

“He likes us!” Schumer is heard saying, referring to Trump. “He likes me, anyway.”

Whispering his thoughts, presumably unaware of the open microphone in front of him, Schumer talked about a conversation with Trump at the White House Wednesday night: "Look, what we said was exactly accurate… Here's what I told him. I said, Mr. President, you're much better off if you can sometimes step right, and sometimes step left. If you have to step just in one direction, you're boxed. He gets that."

He was also heard saying, “Oh, it’s going to work out, and it’ll make us more productive, too.”

Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi dined with Trump Wednesday and announced afterward that they had agreed to work on protecting certain young immigrants under the DACA program and not tie it to a border wall.

On Thursday morning, tweets and comments by Trump and White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders at times seemed to contradict the Democratic leaders' take-away from their meeting, but The New York Times reported later in the day that Trump ultimately seemed to agree with them.

In remarks to reporters as he left the White House on Thursday, Mr. Trump said, "We're working on a plan for DACA," referring to protections for immigrants who are part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. He confirmed, "the wall will come later."
