10 arrested after brawl involving 200 people breaks out at Louisiana alternative school

BATON ROUGE, La. — Ten people were arrested after nearly 200 students and parents engaged in a fight at a Louisiana alternative school on Wednesday, authorities said.

The fights included multiple brawls across the campus of the East Baton Rouge Readiness Alternative School in Baton Rouge, WAFB-TV reported. The alternative school is for students with disciplinary issues, according to The Associated Press.

Video shared with WBRZ-TV showed chairs being thrown in the school’s gymnasium and multiple students being detained by law enforcement officials. The brawl spilled out into the courtyard outside the gym, the AP reported.

According to officials, a Baton Rouge police officer was seriously injured and taken to an area hospital with a broken hip and head lacerations, WAFB reported.

“I had a deputy punched in the face and possibly bitten,” Casey Rayborn Hicks, a spokesperson for the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, told the AP.

Three of the people arrested were students who were charged with battery on a police officer, a felony, according to WAFB. One 17-year-old male was arrested by the sheriff’s office on the battery charge, including the peace with force/violence and resisting arrest. The office also arrested two teens, ages 16 and 17 on a count each of disturbing the peace by fistic encounter.

The Baton Rouge Police Department arrested two males, 17 and 15, on battery charges, WBRZ reported.

The sheriff’s office also charged seven other people on charges ranging from disturbing the peace to resisting arrest, according to the television station.
