Black Lives Matter mural vandalized in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. — A “Black Lives Matter” mural on a street in downtown Orlando was vandalized Friday night, police said.

The Orlando Police Department said it was aware the mural on Rosalind Avenue was defaced and it is actively investigating the incident.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Commissioner Regina Hill and other local faith and community leaders joined together with a host of volunteers on Friday to a paint a street mural of the phrase “Black Lives Matter” on the pavement in downtown Orlando.

The 400-foot mural stretches along Rosalind Avenue in front of Lake Eola between Washington and Robinson streets.

City Commissioner Regina Hill was at the site of the mural Saturday morning and told Channel 9 that crews were on their way to clean up the vandalism.

Orlando police are asking anyone with information to call Crimeline.

“We’re deeply saddened that a symbol of our commitment to ending racial inequality created with our community was vandalized,” Dyer said. “This type of behavior has no place in our city, and this will not deter our efforts to bring about real change and action.”

Crews painted over the graffiti and Rosalind Avenue reopened to traffic.
