The powerful weapons, which have twice the range of any weapon the U.S. has sent Ukraine so far, are ground-launched.

The bombs will be part of an aid package announced Friday, The Associated Press reported.

The package will provide Ukraine with the Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb- a guided missile with a range of 90 miles, two officials told CNN.

The announcement of the aid package comes a week after the U.S. announced it would send Abrams tanks and the Patriot missile defense system to Ukraine.

The U.S. had refused to send the bombs which could be used to attack targets in Russia.

According to CNN, the package will be divided between $500 million in weapons and equipment pulled from U.S. inventories and approximately $1.7 billion in supplies that will be purchased from military contractors, known as the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).
