Uncle of Jacksonville murder victim: I held his hand as he died

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is searching for the shooter who killed one man and injured another Thursday night in the Durkeeville section of Jacksonville.

The victim’s family tells Action News Jax they’re also looking for answers.

Calvin Daniels says his nephew, Chris Bing, was the man shot and killed. Daniels says he witnessed the shooting and held his nephew as he took his last breaths.

“He’s choking on his blood. He’s squeezing my hand saying ‘unc, unc’ and he’s squeezing my hand,” Daniels said. “They were walking from the store back home. They got shot up. The man had a hole in his back this big.

"This man’s leg was severed, and I’m holding his hand. I’m holding on to him."

According to the police report, officers found two people shot and lying in the grass when they arrived at the Kings Ridge Apartments.

Daniels said officers tried to clear him from the shooting scene.

He describes, “They’re standing there, telling me, ‘Get away from the scene, get away from the scene.' How can I get away from someone I love and see everyday?”

“I don’t fault the sheriff’s department. I don’t fault Duval," Daniels said.

Daniels says Bing and the other victim, who was taken to the hospital, were on their way back from the store when they were shot.

He has no idea what could have motivated the shooting.

“This a young man. This man come to my house. We sit down and talk. He tells me how he wants to get out the streets,” Daniels says of his nephew. “It’s just, it’s crazy. I don’t make sense.”

The family is searching for the shooter and says this is just another example of violence gone too far.

“We have to just sit down and do a real vigil and allow these young people in Jacksonville to understand this don’t pay,” says Daniels. “We’re going to do a memorial out here in honor of little Chris.”

There is a growing memorial for Bing on 12th Street where the shooting occurred.

“I had to watch my nephew literally die last night. I was holding his hand. I’ve got the blood on my hands now. I was holding his hand, Daniels said.  “I mean it hurt, that hurt, that’s my nephew.”
