A Duval County Public Schools spokesperson said that the plan also addresses school security, removing portables, consolidating and building new schools and a plan to deal with facilities' maintenance backlogs.

Duval County Public Schools has a $243 million dollar maintenance backlog as of June 12.

According to DCPS, the plan was approved by a 5 to 1 vote.

The half-cent sales tax, a proposal on how to fund the now-approved Master Facility Plan Recommendations, is waiting for the City Council to approve to place it on a ballot for voters.

The half-cent sales tax would repair and replace some of, what are considered to be, the oldest school buildings in the state.
