Beef, eggs, ham part of massive nationwide recall

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced a massive recall of more than 6.5 million pounds of beef products that could be contaminated with Salmonella Newport.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service division of the USDA says the health risk is high in the Class 1 recall.

The beef products, which include ground beef, were packaged from July 26 to Sept. 7 and have the establishment number “EST. 267 in the USDA inspection mark.

The beef was shipped to stores and institutions across the country, the USDA said in a press release.

So far the department’s investigation has found 57 patients from 16 states with illnesses linked to eating the contaminated beef.

Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, which the USDA says is one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses.

Common symptoms of the condition include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food.

89,000 pounds of ham recalled after at least one death from Listeria 

A North Carolina company is recalling thousands of pounds of ready-to-eat ham products that could be contaminated with Listeria, a potentially deadly bacteria.

Johnson County Hams announced a recall of 89,096 pounds of ready-to-eat deli-loaf ham items that were produced between April 3, 2017, and Oct. 2, 2018, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The deli ham products were sold in five states: Maryland, North Carolina, New York, South Carolina and Virginia

At least one person has died and three others were sickened after eating deli ham products from Johnson County Hams, the USDA said.

  • Varying weights of 7 to 8 pounds plastic-wrapped "JOHNSTON COUNTY HAMS, INC. COUNTRY STYLE FULLY COOKED BONELESS DELI HAM."
  • Varying weights of 7 to 8 pounds plastic-wrapped "Ole Fashioned Sugar Cured The Old Dominion Brand Hams Premium Fully Cooked Country Ham" with sell-by dates from 4/10/2018 to 9/27/2019.
  • Varying weights of 7 to 8 pounds plastic-wrapped "Padow's Hams & Deli, Inc. FULLY COOKED COUNTRY HAM BONELESS Glazed with Brown Sugar."
  • Varying weights of 7 to 8 pounds plastic-wrapped "Premium Fully Cooked Country Ham LESS SALT Distributed By: Valley Country Hams LLC" with sell-by dates from 4/10/2018 to 9/27/2019.
  • Varying weights of 7 to 8 pounds plastic-wrapped "GOODNIGHT BROTHERS COUNTRY HAM Boneless Fully Cooked."

Eating food contaminated with Listeria can cause serious infections, especially among older adults, people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women and their newborns, the USDA reported.

Symptoms of infection include fever, muscle aches, headaches, stiff neck, confusion and gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea.

Eggs recalled due to potential salmonella contamination

The Food and Drug Administration has announced a recall of eggs due to possible salmonella contamination.

Gravel Ridge Farms is recalling its Cage Free Large Eggs in dozen and 2 ½ dozen packs.

The eggs have the UPC code of 7-06970-38444-4 and use by dates of July 25 through Oct. 3.

The eggs were distributed between June 25 and Sept. 6 in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee to both stores and restaurants.

If you have the eggs, you’re being told to return them to the store or throw them away.

The FDA advises, "If any consumers have Gravel Ridge Farms eggs in their refrigerator, they should be discarded, regardless of the date stamped on the package."
