Coronavirus: UNF graduate working as nurse in New York hospital sends warning to local families

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Kelsey Owen, a University of North Florida graduate, is currently a nurse working on a COVID-19 floor of a New York hospital and describes it as a nightmare.

Comparing Florida’s coronavirus cases to New York, it’s not tough to see why she’s describing it as a nightmare. New York has 203,000 cases of coronavirus compared to Florida’s 21,000.

COVID-19 related-deaths in New York have surpassed 10,000, while in Florida over 570 people have died because of it.

Owen told Action News Jax she doesn’t feel safe, as she’s having to go against the training she received at UNF.

She is having to re-use the same mask for a week because there’s not enough supplies to handle the pandemic.

She spoke with Action News Jax to share a warning to local families in the Jacksonville area, begging people to self-isolate, after seeing her friends in Florida post pictures not social distancing.

Owen is warning all Floridians things can become serious quickly, so following the guidelines is important.

“I would just tell everyone, especially my friends down in Florida, that you have time to protect yourself. You have time to prepare, that this is something that’s scary. It’s real, and it can happen. It can happen to you and I don’t want this to happen to anyone. It’s just awful,” Owen said.
