Kid Care Report: DCF gave two class 2 and four class 3 violations to local day cares

The Department of Children and Families gave Cinderella Child Development Center on 44th E. 27th Street two class 2 violations, which DCF says, could pose a threat to the health or safety of a child.

The first class 2 violation was for a  fence that had nails sticking out and gaps that could allow kids to get out. Action News Jax asked the director, Gregory Floyd, about the violations.  Floyd said he was going to fix the fence himself.

"I got about 11 panels and I’m going to fix them within the next couple of weeks,” said Floyd.

DCF gave him until Wednesday to fix it.

Also, a counselor watched a staff member give a child medication that said "do not use" if the child is under 6. The child  was 4 years old.  Floyd told Action News Jax the medicine came from the parent and they center was asked to give it to a sick child.

The director said he will no longer give kids medicine unless it's prescribed by a doctor. He told Action News Jax he’s glad the state checks in on his center.

"This keeps us on our toes,” said Floyd.

The other day care cited is La Petite Academy in Baymeadows. It was given four class 3 violations from the state. A class 3 is the least serious and poses a low potential for harm.

The violations were for:
·         Toilets that needed cleaning — Due Jan. 26.
·         Crib mattresses that were damaged — Fixed at time of inspection.
·         A bottle wasn't labeled with child's name — Fixed at time of inspection.
·         An employee didn't complete their training — Due Feb. 16.

A La Petite spokesperson sent Action News Jax a statement:
"La Petite Academy is committed to providing a safe and nurturing learning environment. This school has earned a NECPA accreditation for excellence. We have strict protocols to make certain we meet or exceed state guidelines, and don't tolerate deviation from our standards of care. We continue to work closely with DCF on responding to and correcting any deficiencies."
