BAKER COUNTY, Fla. — A man is dead after an early morning shooting in Baker County that investigators say appears to have been an act of self-defense.
According to the Baker County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 4:30 a.m. Monday to the Macclenny Veterinary Hospital, where a 77-year-old woman reported shooting a man who attacked her.
Investigators said the woman, who has only been identified as the victim, shot 57-year-old Alvin Tyrone Tisdale. Tisdale was taken to UF Health Jacksonville, where he later died.
Detectives said the woman has been cooperating with investigators, and a preliminary investigation indicates she acted in self-defense.
“It’s peaceful, that’s the reason we moved out here. It was laid-back, and you don’t get hassle. You don’t have any break-ins or no trouble like that. No shootings or no problems like that around here,” a nearby resident said.
Action News Jax observed Baker County deputies canvassing the parking lot at the veterinary hospital Monday morning as the investigation continued.
The back parking lot contains posted signs asking people not to feed feral cats. The business next door has security cameras.
Deputies have not said whether any surveillance video captured the shooting. However, nearby businesses told Action News Jax they were asked to turn over footage to law enforcement.
The animal hospital remained open Monday. Staff members told Action News Jax they were not involved in the incident and that no animals stay at the facility overnight.
The investigation remains ongoing.
