Baby recovering after being dragged by dog in Nassau County

A baby who was dragged by a dog is recovering at the hospital. Nassau County deputies said the dog’s leash somehow became wrapped around the baby. A 17-year-old was arrested for aggravated child abuse.

“He was walking and he heard the baby screaming, and he jumped the fence,” said Dale Kato.

That’s when Kato said his friend rushed in to help a baby who was tangled up in a dog’s leash. When he jumped over, the dog was sitting near the baby.

“When he moved, the dog would move. So he stayed still. The dog stayed still,” said Kato.

The witness said he then ran to the door and banged on it repeatedly, but no one answered. According to the arrest report, the witness flagged down someone driving by.

The witness told deputies he was “freaking out” because the baby was just lying there in the yard.

He said the leash was wrapped around the baby’s neck, and she was being dragged through the yard.

The witness said it was approximately 20 minutes from the time he first heard the baby until he flagged down a passing car.

He then ran to the home again and started banging on the door and windows. Deputies said a 17-year-old walked out of the home, picked up the baby and called her boyfriend’s mother.

Deputies said the baby girl was covered in blood with several wounds and cuts all over her body.

“If he wouldn’t have been there, the young one would’ve probably died,” Kato said.

The Department of Children and Families said it’s investigating, and the baby will be placed in its care after she is released from the hospital.
