Bat infestation at Middleburg High School, Clay County School District confirms

The Clay County School District has confirmed that there is a bat infestation at Middleburg High School.

Here is a statement released by the school district:

"Clay County District Schools is aware there is a bat colony on/near the Middleburg High School campus. The bats normally reside in the bat houses behind the main building; however, on Monday night during a basketball game, about a dozen of those bats were confirmed to have made their way inside of the gym. The remainder of the basketball game was cancelled and all personnel in the gym left without incident.

The district's maintenance team is currently trying to locate where the bats are entering the building, and if there are any bats actually residing within the ceiling of the building. The bats are a protected species; therefore, the district is complying with all state and federal regulations concerning the bat populations and how they can be relocated. The school's administration is monitoring the situation. The District is taking every precaution necessary to ensure the safety of the students and the bats."
