Pregnant woman survives after being ejected in I-295 crash

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A two-car crash on Interstate 295 northbound and 103rd Street caused massive delays Thursday.

The crash happened around noon when a car carrying five people, including a pregnant woman and two children, crashed and rolled over at least once.

The pregnant woman was taken to UF Health, but was later listed in fair condition.

Andria Rowser wasn’t too far behind on I-295 around noon Thursday when he saw the crash unfold.

“I saw the vehicle up here kind of look like it lost control, came over, hit this side and went on the other side and crashed,” said Rowser.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol crash report, the driver of the Mazda said her car started pulling and drifting toward the left, causing her to collide with a GMC in the lane next to her.

The driver said she over-corrected and lost control of the car.

A view from Sky Action News Jax showed the delays backing all the way up to Blanding Boulevard. Other drivers were seen standing on the side of the road, just waiting.

FHP said during the roll-over, a 21-year-old woman fell out of the car. Rowser said it was the pregnant woman who was ejected.

“She was kind of walking around in a daze, the other girl, the driver was still in the car,” said Rowser. “I'm just glad those kids weren't hurt.”

According to the crash report, everyone was wearing their seat belt, except for the 1-year-old boy. The driver of the GMC did not suffer any injuries.

The backups were so severe that motorists were spotted making U-turns against traffic to escape the roadway.

Around 1:10 p.m. crews opened the road back up.

The driver of the Mazda may face careless driving and child restraint charges.
