JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a report that a person was shot at the Westgate Apartments located at 5202 La Ventura Dr. E. Sunday morning.
When they arrived they found a 15-year-old boy with a life-threatening gunshot wound to his head. Jacksonville Fire Rescueprovided emergency medical care to save the teen’s life and transported him to a local hospital.
According to police, preliminary information indicates that the teen was handling a gun when it discharged and critically wounded him.

There was another minor present in the bedroom and witnessed the shooting. Other residents were inside the apartment when the shooting occurred as well, but did not witness the shooting.
Police say the shooting seems to have been accidental shooting, but an investigation is ongoing.
