New UNF poll shows majority of people favor half-cent sales tax for Duval schools (DCPS)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A new poll out this morning from the University of North Florida shows a majority of people surveyed are in favor of approving the half-cent sales tax this November for Duval County schools. Dr. Mike Binder the director of the public opinion research lab says 69% or people surveyed said they would vote yes on the measure while 28% said they would vote no and 3% said they didn’t know or they refused to answer.

“We are seeing support across the board, the chamber of commerce is out in support of this, the mayor, has been, has indicated his support for this, a lot of members on city council are supportive of this,” Binder says.

He says there isn’t much discrepancy when it comes to party affiliation on this issue. The numbers show 52% of Republicans surveyed said they were voting for it while 47% were not going to vote for it, 85% of Democrats surveyed said they would vote yes on the measure while 8% said they weren’t voting for it. 77% of people surveyed with no party affiliation said they would vote for the measure while 23% said they wouldn’t.

Binder says he thinks the measure could pass easily this November because there isn’t a clear opposition to it.

“I’d be flabbergasted if it didn’t pass,” Binder says.
