Over 95,000 voters already voted in Duval’s primary election with mail-in ballots and early voting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Over 95,000 voters have already cast their ballot for Tuesday’s primary election in Duval County.

With over 53,000 choosing the mail-in option, Duval County Supervisor of Elections Mike Hogan says that’s an increase of about 20,000 compared to years past.

Voters we spoke to say this will be the first time they’re not going in person.

I just wanted to try and go ahead and get it in ahead of time I think that was the best option for me this time,” says one voter.

Another says, “For the safety of my family and myself yeah I’m going to go ahead and do a mail-in ballot.”

But Hogan is still expecting about 90 thousand voters to cast their ballot in-person Tuesday.

Due to the pandemic, things may look a little different. Poll workers will be wearing masks and face shields, plus they’ve added cleaning to all contact areas.

Hogan explains, “We’re going to have product - hand wipes, hand sanitizer like last time. The one thing we have added they have a person that they are just to do sanitizing.”

There are about 1200 poll workers set to help in Tuesday’s primary. In March, Duval County had about 120 reserves. For Tuesday, they only have 30.

Hogan says, “We have a high percentage that is 65 and above since training we’ve lost 200 that we’re going to be here with us on Election Day.”
