Revised Duval County school reopening plans expected to be released Tuesday

A revised reopening plan is expected Tuesday for Duval County. Action News Jax’s Beth Rousseau has gone through a preview of the plans Superintendent Dr. Diana Greene and district leaders have come up with for the reopening.

Greene says they’ll be requesting a waiver from the state mandate requiring campuses reopen for five days a week for all students in August. She says the three big goals as students go back to school are:

• Assess learning loss
• Address mental health and well being
• Accelerate learning and close the gaps

Greene says there’s a long list of steps the school district has to take to make sure they accomplish those goals safely. Inside the classroom, the superintendent says they’ve ordered enough face shields for students Pre-K through 2nd grade.

Greene explains they already know they can’t meet CDC social distancing guidelines to get kids to class because it would take 10 hours.

She also mentions the Republican National Convention as a reason they’re asking for a waiver from the state mandate.

“Based on the number of cases we are dealing with in Duval, as well as a major event happening in august in Duval that will bring thousands, that will bring tens of thousands of people to our city and we have no idea what impact it will have,” Greene said.

Greene says these are not finalized plans but this is a good idea of what reopening will look like.

School leaders will be discussing the plans at 9 a.m. in a workshop Tuesday.
