Expert: Homicide charges still possible in Lonzie and Haleigh disappearances

SATSUMA, Fla. — Every single document ever filed in the Haleigh Cummings case sits in a room at the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

"We are constantly working on anything that comes in," said Capt. Dominic Piscitello

Piscitello believes Misty Croslin knows what happened to Haleigh. Both Croslin and Haleigh's father Ronald Cummings are serving narcotics-related sentences.

Fast forward nearly seven years, Haleigh's distant cousin Lonzie is also missing. Those related to the case are also behind bars on other charges.

Action News Jax Law and Safety Expert Dale Carson said there's a reason for that.

"What you don't want to do as a prosecutor is charge somebody with murder, you have 175 days to bring it to trial. If you can't bring it to trial within that period of time then the state is going to lose the case," Carson said.

Carson said there's no statute of limitations on murder.

"The intelligent thing to do is to get your evidence together first and then bring the charge when you know you have sufficient evidence to convict," Carson said.

Piscitello said there's no evidence to suggest Lonzie and Haleigh's disappearances are related.

His hope is that Croslin eventually speaks up.

"We believe that she has key information," Piscitello said.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office believes Croslin isn't the only person with information on Haleigh's disappearance.

The case is still active and Piscitello said they get anywhere from three to 10 tips a month.
