Future of Jacksonville Beach Pier still uncertain

It's now been over a year since the Jacksonville Beach Pier was ravaged by Hurricane Matthew, but a meeting Wednesday morning with city leaders should  help determine a timeline to fix the damage.

The pier has been shut down now for a year due to significant structure damage and people are anxious for it to reopen.

An Action News Jax investigation revealed the structure was built to withstand 135 mph winds, but Hurricane Matthew had winds only 85 to 90 mph that were still strong enough to rip off a 350-foot section.

Action News Jax told you in April that a design consultant has already been hired to fix the pier, but the project has been left in limbo with no construction timeline in place, leaving a lot of work to be done before residents and tourists can enjoy it.

The city of Jacksonville is hoping to at least get partial reimbursement from FEMA to fix the pier.
