GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. — On Friday, Clay County was among the many municipalities in our area reflecting on 25 years since the 9/11 attacks. It was a joint effort between Clay County Fire Rescue and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
The first responders conducted an Honor March through downtown Green Cove Springs.
The march started at 9:15 AM on Palmetto Avenue and Walnut Street. It concluded with a ceremony at nearby Spring Park.

During the ceremony, officials read the names of the over 400 first responders who died in the terror attacks a quarter century ago.
On the day the attacks happened in 2001, President Bush was in Sarasota reading to elementary school children. Military mom Katherine Sklanka worked at a school cafeteria in Connecticut when the news came through.
“They were young kids, so they, I don’t think they really understood. But you know, the adults, you could see the fear in their eyes and stuff,” Sklanka recalled.

Janey Fox lived in Boston, where hijacked American Airlines Flight 11, which crashed into the North Twin Tower, originated.
“I was late for work, so I took a cab to the train station, and the cab driver returned and looked at me and said, ‘Did you hear what happened? I said no. And he said, ‘The tower, it’s down,’ Fox recalled.
Governor Ron DeSantis honored the nearly 3000 who perished, and the approximately 9,400 who died from 9/11 related illnesses.
“So may God honor the sacrifices of the first responders and the civilians who sprang into Action against all odds,” said DeSantis.
