High tide concerns a year after Hurricane Irma caused major flooding

People in low-lying neighborhoods are paying close attention to the tides Tuesday night. A new moon means a higher risk of tidal flooding.

The concern comes one year to the day after the major flooding from Hurricane Irma.

Driving around the Davis Shores neighborhood, there are newly constructed homes, homes still under construction and plots of land where houses once stood.

“A lot of people are in a tough spot and waiting on insurance money to come through before they can do the next step,” homeowner Leah Holloway said.

And this is a year after Hurricane Irma and nearly two years after Hurricane Matthew. “Hurricane season every year now is going to be "hold your breath,'" homeowner Maggie McCready said.

Most neighbors like McCready said that their home got damaged in both storms. “I think one more flood and that would do it for us and probably a lot of people,” McCready said.

But hurricanes aren’t the only threat.

With the new moon cycle, the highest tide will be Tuesday night just before 11:00.

“We have been watching the high tides every day, twice a day, going out and looking. It is high, but it hasn’t gotten close to cresting over,” Holloway said.

Even though Hurricane Florence isn’t headed our way, there will still be a chance for minor flooding.

“At the end of our street there is still an issue. There is a hole in the pipe, so water backs up into our street,” homeowner Karen Fluman said.

And with the hurricanes forming in the Atlantic, neighbors are concerned that their homes will get damaged again.

“Anytime it rains, anytime it says there is a hurricane or tropical storm, we all get a little panicked,” Fluman said.

There will be another high tide Wednesday before 11:30 a.m.
