Lettuce not safe to eat, CDC warns

U.S. consumers are being advised to not eat any romaine lettuce as the Centers of Disease Control investigate an E. coli outbreak.

"Consumers who have any type of romaine lettuce in their home should not eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick," the CDC said in a warning.

Publix Supermarkets confirmed Tuesday that they would remove the product from shelves.

"We have made the decision to remove all products containing Romaine Lettuce until the time when the federal agencies indicate it is safe to resume normal operations," Publix said in a statement.

The CDC is advising that U.S. consumers not eat any romaine lettuce, and retailers and restaurants not serve or sell any, until we learn more about the outbreak. This investigation is ongoing and the advice will be updated as more information is available.
