Local mothers united by tragedy fight to keep son's case from going cold

It has been 14 months since a local teen was gunned down in the street- two days after his 18th birthday- and still no one has been arrested.

Jacksonville police said Maurice Hobbs was walking down Agave Road last January when he was gunned down.

Officers said another man was with Hobbs and was injured in the shooting, but he survived.

“My life sentence began on Jan. 26, 2017,” Hobbs’ mother, Latasha, said.  “When will [the shooter] begin theirs?”

Today, Latasha Hobbs draws her strength from another local mother with whom she's united in tragedy.
Last July, Cecilia Shepard's son, Keegan Roberts, was shot and killed by his neighbor.

The State Attorney's Office ruled it a justifiable homicide.

Today, Hobbs and Shepard are inseparable.

“We help hold each other up,” Shepard said.

According to police, there have been more than 100 murders since January of 2017.

The goal of both women is making sure the case of Maurice Hobbs doesn't go cold.

“I will fight until my final breath on this Earth to bring justice to my son,” Hobbs said.
