ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — The city of St. Augustine will mark the official completion of the Court Theophelia Flood Mitigation Project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the neighborhood on Friday.
The event, at 9:30 a.m. on Bannan Ave., between Court Theophelia and Court Louise Streets, will not only be a celebration for city officials. It’ll be an joyous ocassion for residents, who have been plagued for years by flooding near their homes.
The public is invited to attend and learn more about the entire project, which provides improved drainage, innovative green infrastructure, and greater protection from localized flooding.
The project mitigates flooding by improving the stormwater system’s ability to manage runoff and reduce standing water in streets.
Funded entirely by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Resilient Florida Program, the project also includes rebuilt roads and update utilities.
“To say that we are excited to see this important project completed is an understatement,” the city’s Chief Resilience Officer Jessica Beach said. “Even more important is to see the improvements working as they were intended for the Court Theophelia neighborhood.”
The project includes the city’s first installation of green stormwater infrastructure using a bioswale, a feature that captures and manages stormwater while providing water-quality benefits.
