Man files complaint against Clay County deputy after being arrested in his neighborhood for trespassing

FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. — Kadeene Adams returned to the Fleming Island Plantation basketball court Wednesday for the first time since he was arrested last week for trespassing.

"I was violated. My rights were violated," he told Action News days after the arrest.

Over the past several weeks, Adams said a Clay County Sheriff's Office deputy, working off duty for the Fleming Island Amenity Center, has been watching him, targeting him and urging him to go home. At times, Adams says he did, but on Thursday he refused.

"The officer says, 'Do you have your ID?'  I said, 'Yes sir. I sure do. Do you recognize me?' He said, 'Yes sir. I sure do. If you have a problem you need to go home.'  I said, 'Officer I don't have a problem. Every time I come up here you have a problem with me, and it's every time I come up here.'"

Action News checked the Fleming Island Plantation Amenity Center policy and found patrons must always have their FIP photo ID cards with them while on FIP property. Adams said he offered to show that ID card to the deputy Thursday.

"I said, 'Officer if you would like me to leave, I would like someone else in a position of authority to tell me to leave because what I think you're doing is illegal.'"

Within minutes, other Clay County deputies responded and Adams was in handcuffs. According to his partially redacted arrest report, the deputy told those officers that Adams told him "he was going to have to fight him to make him leave," which Adams denies.

"I'm ticked off because I did nothing wrong," Adams said.

Adams has now filed a complaint with the Clay County Sheriff's Office against the deputy. A spokesperson confirms it was received, and will be reviewed to determine if it warrants an internal investigation. Action News was told that could take time because Adams is now facing criminal charges of trespassing with a warning.

Adams told Action News he also filed a complaint with the FIP Amenity Center. The manager told Action News they could not comment because the Clay County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
