JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A local mom is working to set an example for her daughter by helping single mothers impacted by Harvey.

Angie Nixon has collected more than $12,000 in donations from across the country and sent that money to 100 single moms in Houston who reached out to her for help.

Nixon hopes to help about 100 more.

Nixon said the requests have ranged from money for medicine and food to diapers and formula.

Angie Nixon is the mother of Natalie Nixon, who at 7 years old created "The Adventures of Moxie Girl" comic book celebrating self-acceptance. In the comic, Moxie Girl is a superhero whose powers come from her afro-puff hair style.
