Mother describes terrifying moment of getting out of burning home

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A woman and her infant were among eight families who were displaced Saturday night after a massive fire engulfed their homes.

The fire was reported at Mathew's Crossing Apartments in Arlington on Saturday.
Jessica Bowering was among those who lost everything in the blaze.

"It was pitch-black smoke, and then the next thing you knowit's completely engulfed in flames," said Bowering.

Bowering said her boyfriend got her and their family out before their apartment went up in flames.
"He grabbed me off the couch and he grabbed the baby, and he was like, 'Get out, get out,'" said Bowering.

She held 9-month-old baby as she watched her home become engulfed by flames a few feet away. Neighbors said they worked as a team to get people out safely. They said everybody was screaming "Get out" and "Fire" while they banged on the doors of residents of the apartment complex.

Twenty people were forced from their homes because of fire, smoke and water damage. No one was injured.

We've contacted the State Fire Marshal's Office to learn what caused the fire, but have not heard back.
