Nassau County mom killed after allegedly getting out of a moving car

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — Family and friends are mourning the loss of a 24-year-old mother from Nassau County. Flowers and a stuffed animal now sit beneath a tree, next to the road where the young mother lost her life.

Hailey Hutto leaves behind a 2-year-old daughter.

"Her daughter Mila, who is 2, now has to grow up without her mom,." Lauren Duke said. She held back tears describing her best friend.

According to a Nassau County police report, Hutto was in the back seat heading home from a party with two friends.

Witnesses said they saw the rear car door open and close while the car was parked at a stop sign. When it started to move again, they say Hutto went head first out of the car.

"It's just a freak accident." Duke said.

The driver, 23-year-old Ashley Collum, is being held at Nassau County Jail on $750,004 bond.

Police said she continued to drive off after Hutto was out of the car.

She is charged with DUI manslaughter, DUI causing death and failure to give information and render aid.

Collum and the other passenger later came back to the scene to speak with police. They claimed Hutto had a habit of jumping out of cars.

"It wasn't unusual for Hailey to be impulsive," Duke said, declining to elaborate beyond that. She said right now, friends are focusing on helping the family. "This was very unexpected, so they will need all the help they can get."
