Nemours Children’s Health receives $2M donation for cancer center renovations

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — Nemours Children’s Health received a $2 million donation to help pay for the renovations for their Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorder. It was also the public lunch of their “Hand in Hand” capital campaign to raise funds. Nemours Children’s Health said having a better experience at their facilities will have better outcomes of who receive treatment and care.

“Its mostly a dragon. I left the mask at home,” said Rhett.

His spirit and enthusiasm is like one, despite what he has been going through for the past few years. Rhett has been battling a brain tumor since Christmas Eve for 2019. His family moved in Jacksonville from DC to receive care. His mother Ashley Fischer, said they’ve just been embracing the journey.

“We live life like Rhett is going to make it to 18, and we live life like Rhett isn’t going to make it to 18. So we say yes to everything,” said Fischer.

Pediatric patients Nemours Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders is growing. Dr. Larry Moss is the president and CEO of Nemours Children’s Health.

“The number of oncology patients seen at Nemours have doubled in the last 10 years. Last year alone we saw more than 2300 children in our center. At any given time, we have over 200 children with cancer on active treatment protocols.”

To meet the demand of care and supportive services for children, Nemours launched a “Hand in Hand” capital campaign to raise funds to renovate its cancer center. Giving a hand is THE PLAYERS Championship with a $2 million donation and pledges to match dollar for dollar all funds raised in support

“Our children in this area deserve this level of treatment,” said Jared Rice, executive Director of THE PLAYERS Championship.

“What it allows us to do is to treat kids with the world class care that we already deliver, in what’s now going to be a world class environment,” said Dr. Moss. “Light, views and beautiful spaces and a really healing environment. Science tells us that actually makes a difference in how patients do.

For the Fischer family, a better healing space could have better outcomes

“Having an environment that you can feel better in, makes you feel better. It’s better psychologically and emotionally,” said John Fischer, Rhett’s father. “It’s going to help the kids get better faster.”
