JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man from New Jersey was killed in a crash early Thursday morning in Jacksonville.
The 28-year-old driver of a Mercedes, Hezekiah Griggs III, was stopped in the safety gore that separates Interstate 95 south and Old St. Augustine Road. The Florida Highway Patrol said the driver had his emergency flashers on but it is not known why he was stopped.
The driver of a tractor-trailer didn't realize he was in the wrong travel lane on I-95, which exited onto Old St. Augustine Road, FHP said. The driver veered back onto I-95 through the safety gore and struck the rear of the Mercedes, troopers said.
Griggs died at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer wasn't injured.
Charges are pending.
