The Clay County Sheriff's Office evacuated the Parkland at Orange Park Apartments on Wells Road due to a shot fired Friday afternoon. A person was later found dead inside an apartment.
CCSO says a deputy was serving paperwork to a tenant inside the complex when they heard a shot from inside an apartment.
CCSO said deputies evacuated the complex as a precaution and attempted negotiations. SWAT team members geared up to try and enter the apartment.
“Around 12:20-12:25, members of our SWAT team made entry into the apartment and they did find one subject deceased,” CCSO public information officer Keith Smith said.
Deputies say only one shot was heard. We asked if this is being considered a suicide.
“Based on the earlier circumstances with the officer being on-scene and setting up a perimeter and we saw no one leave the area, that’s where the investigation tends to go,” Smith said.
But homicide detectives are still investigating. Deputies say no one else was found inside the home.
