A male suspect deemed responsible for a Mixon Town burglary that escalated into a fatal shooting is in custody tonight.
UPDATED STORY: JSO: Murder suspect arrested in fatal shooting who drove car into creek, went to Dunkin’ Donuts
After arriving on the scene, police found a man who sustained a gunshot wound in a home on Orion Street. The victim was taken to UF Health, where he underwent surgery, but he later died at the hospital.
Investigators say the suspect and an unidentified white female fled the scene in a 2018 Toyota Yaris that was later found in a creek in Mayport.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office tells us the female, whom police refer to as a witness, told them she and the suspect drove the car off the bridge on State Road A1A.

The two then went to a Dunkin’ Donuts in Atlantic Beach where the woman told a clerk to call the police.
“It was out of a movie,” said Sergio Brown, an employee at Dunkin’ Donuts.
He tells us his coworker was shocked when the woman asked her to call police.
“She kind of like, stepped back and was like, ‘OK...’ and she alerted our manager,” he said.
Brown tells Action News Jax neither the man nor the woman was wearing shoes, and the female’s feet were covered in mud.
He says it’s not uncommon to see people barefoot in a beach town, but this situation seemed unusual to him.
When he later learned the two were being sought by law enforcement in connection with a homicide investigation, he says their behavior made more sense.

“They were kind of like peeking out,” said Brown. “And for her to ask my coworkers to call the police, I kind of like put everything together, like alright, so obviously they were involved in something.”
He says he was trying to piece together why the woman may have called the police.
“I guess the girl kind of had a change of heart,” he said. "If she wanted to get out of the situation.”
JSO is investigating, and the homicide unit is interviewing several people in reference to the case. Anyone with information is encouraged to come forward.
We reached out to the Atlantic Beach Police Department for the 911 call, but ABPD tells us the records won’t be released while the investigation is open.
Brown says surveillance cameras did capture the man and woman inside the restaurant, but the footage was turned over to investigators. We are reaching out to the company for a copy of the footage.
