Questions surround meningitis death

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Andre Sheffield's family wants answers. Now.

“Seems like they’re hiding something and they don’t want us to know everything,” Brian Sheffield said.

Brian is Andre’s brother. They grew up in foster care, but always stayed close.

“To hear that my youngest brother is passed away when the last thing I heard about – was nothing was wrong with him. He was healthy. He was just getting into a little trouble here and there,” Sheffield continued.

There’s a lot of questions surrounding this case, like what Sheffield was doing in Brevard County when he's from Jacksonville? The Department of Juvenile Justice wouldn't tell us, but did say:

“A nurse from the facility responded immediately and performed CPR while Emergency Medical Services was contacted. He was transported via EMS to Wuestoff Medical Center in Rockledge, Florida, where he was then pronounced dead. Initial details surrounding this tragedy are still being investigated."

Brian tells us on Andre's last day he woke up complaining about headaches and stomach pains, and was given aspirin -- which is not enough to treat meningitis, which is swelling of the brain and spinal cord membranes. He can never get his little brother back, but Brian says an explanation will help.

“We’re still trying to find out everything ourselves. Just want to see my brother again.”

The Department of Health tells us it is monitoring as many as 120 children and staff who may have had contact with Sheffield. We're told those individuals were given "preventative medication."
