Resident at Villages at Baymeadows says garbage bin is leaking into pond

Corey Johnson lives in the Villages at Baymeadows. He contacted Action News Jax after he got tired of trash piling up at a garbage bin and the slimy substance leaking out of it.

He said he’s seen the slime drip into the pond nearby.

“I haven’t seen no activity in the pond with the animals for a month now,” said Johnson.

He said the smell is overwhelming.

“I’ve called and complained about it, the smell is horrendous,” said Johnson.

In addition to the slime, he said couches and tires have been piled outside for two weeks.

Also, the recycling area has turned into a pit for people to throw more trash.

“They need to get someone out here to clean it up. That’s their job,” said Johnson.

Action News Jax went into the leasing office to get answers.

“We have representatives that I can get to speak with you,” said one of the ladies at the office.

She told us she would go check it out, get us in touch with their representatives and call us back.

This isn’t the first time we’ve been called out to the complex for help.

In 2014, there was a similar problem. We found trash piling up and got results for neighbors.

We reached out to Advanced Disposal, which is in charge of picking up trash from the complex.

They sent out their area general manager to check things out.

They say bulk items like the couches are the complex’s responsibility to pick up and put in a larger container that Advanced Disposal will then pick up.

AD also says the trash container that is leaking is owned by the complex. The company offered to repair it.

A representative for Harbor Group Management, the company that manages the Villages at Baymeadows, sent this statement to Action News Jax:

In addition, we have become aware of resident complaints about the smell of the compactor, and we are already addressing the complaints.

Our maintenance technicians have cleaned it thoroughly, and we are taking steps to make sure the odor does not return in the future.

Unrelated to the compactor concerns, options are being explored to improve the water circulation of the nearby pond. Harbor Group Management Co., LLC is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of comfortable living for our residents.

Should any of our residents have concerns, our management office is open to receive them and we will do everything within our ability to address such concerns promptly.
