Safety changes coming to First Coast High School after two students were recently hit by cars

New safety changes are coming near First Coast High School, where two students were recently hit by cars.

Police said that, in October, a 15-year-old student was hit and seriously hurt while trying to cross Dunn Avenue to get to his bus stop.

Three months later, another student was hit by a car in front of the school.

“I’ve gotten so many phone calls from some parents,” said Reginald Gaffney, the city councilman for the area.

Gaffney said there’s now a plan in place to make the walk and drive to school safer.

“This is going to become a safety zone right here, where parents can feel safe dropping off their kids,” he said.

Gaffney said those changes include a crosswalk in front of the school and another one near a bus stop, both with flashing lights. He also said the speed limit will be lowered from 45 to 40 mph, and a fence along Duval Station Road will be pushed back to make room for a sidewalk.

Parents said those changes can’t come soon enough.

“I am so very happy that there’s going to be some changes,” said a parent picking up her daughter.

While Gaffney believes these changes will make a difference, he said this is just the beginning. More changes will come later.

The $200,000 project will start after the school year ends and will be completed for the next school year.
