Golfer who tested positive for coronavirus may have exposed others at local club

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — A member of Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach tested positive for COVID-19.

The president and general manager told Action News Jax a member tested positive for COVID-19 after playing golf last weekend.

“I played yesterday, on the golf course,” said club member Tom Deaton.

While using social distancing, Action News Jax interviewed Tom Deaton, who is a member of the club and plays golf there often.

“A lot of older people live here so should be very concerned,” Deaton mentioned.

This is the email sent to members who spent time at the club before it made safety changes against the virus.

"Today, we have been informed by a member that they have tested positive for COVID 19 and had visited the Club this past weekend playing golf and spending time in the lounge prior to our recent club operation modification. The people with that member and their guests have been notified. However, if you were in the Golf Club Lounge in the afternoon of Saturday or Sunday, you may have been exposed. That member has not been at the Club since Sunday.

“If you have any questions regarding such exposure or concerns, you should call your healthcare provider for medical advice. We’ve consulted with medical professionals and CDC guidelines and feel that the current restraints on our operation are sufficient to maintain it in the current use pattern. However, this process is very fluid and will continue to be evaluated on a daily basis!”

“I’m very concerned, me and my wife are pretty elderly, we just try to keep our distance and stay at home, really,” Deaton explained.

“We got our fingers crossed,” Deaton said.

Neighbors chimed in on our Action News Jax Facebook page about the notice sent to members.

Meanwhile, the president of the club said in an email that the club will stay open after following through with medical professionals and reviewing Center for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.
