State-run Regency vaccination site to serve all of Duval after three others close

Jacksonville, Fla. —

The City of Jacksonville announced Thursday the Mandarin and Lane Wiley Senior Centers will close after 6 p.m. Friday.

Any resident 65 years and older, regardless of birth month, can show up Friday after the city reported low turnout Thursday.

The Duval County Department of Health will also close its Prime Osborn Center vaccine site Friday leaving only the state-run Regency site to serve all of Duval County.

Regency vaccinated 854 people Wednesday on its first day opening to appointment-only for anyone 65 years and older. The site is expected to vaccinate about 1,000 people a day.

The City of Jacksonville’s Lane Wiley and Mandarin Senior Centers vaccinated about 1,100 people a day. So far, both sites have vaccinated a total of 10,170 people. The Duval County Health Department reported it has vaccinated just under 1,000 people a day at Prime Osborn.

Mayor Lenny Curry announced Tuesday that the two city-run senior centers were closing because of an issue with supply and demand. Between Lane Wiley and Mandarin Senior Centers, Prime Osborn, and Regency, Duval was administering about 3,000 total vaccines daily.

Next week, Regency will be the only vaccination site administering just a third of total vaccines. Mayor Lenny Curry said the city has the capacity to add more sites, but the state will not allocate anymore vaccines.

The state reported about a week ago, it administered a total of 97,345 vaccines. Earlier this week, only 32,842 were vaccinated state-wide on Tuesday. In Duval, a total of 55,388 people have been vaccinated.

Action News Jax has made repeated requests to the Florida Division of Emergency Management to ask about problems of supply and demand.

As of Thursday afternoon, no one has returned our requests.

Anyone who got their first dose at either Mandarin, Lane Wiley, or Prime Osborn can still go to the same facility for their second dose. But after this week, they will not take any new patients.
