Student accidentally brings drugs to St. Johns County elementary school

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla — At around 5:30 p.m. last night, families at the South Woods Elementary School in St. Johns County got an unexpected email.

School administrators learned yesterday that a student had unknowingly brought an unidentified substance on campus. Out of an abundance of caution, St. Johns County Sherriff’s Office performed a test that came back positive for presumptive fentanyl. In collaboration with SJSO, St. Johns County Fire and Rescue, and St. Johns County School District, South Woods Elementary states that they took appropriate actions to clean the areas the student had occupied.

Action News Jax reached out to St. John’s County Sheriff’s Office to learn more and they stated:

“After additional testing with more advanced equipment, the substance tested positive as meth. The substance is being rushed to a lab for chemical analysis which could take a couple of days.

This incident is currently an active investigation and one that we take very seriously as the safety and security of our kids in schools are of the utmost importance to our agency. At this point, the substance has not been positively identified as fentanyl. The substance is pending chemical analysis. We have no further information we can release this early in our investigation as we do not want to jeopardize the outcome and want to ensure all investigative measures are not hindered. When it’s appropriate, more information can be released.

Quick and immediate action was taken as soon as we obtained the substance and we’re glad to report that no students or faculty members were exposed.

Additionally, the school district sent an email out to parents to notify them of the incident. The school district also took extra measures to ensure the safety of the school by sanitizing the area(s) where the substance may have been.

We will continue to investigate this matter thoroughly.”
