USS Iwo Jima vital to the nation's defense

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — There's a motto on the USS Iwo Jima.

There, "Uncommon Valor" dates back to World War II.

Those aboard the ship take it very seriously.

The USS Iwo Jima stands tall in comparison to the other ships in the fleet, with thousands of tons of steel towering high into the air.

Action News watched as crews refueled helicopters on its massive flight deck.

The ship is equipped with strike capabilities that allow it to launch watercraft and aircraft while staying a safe distance from enemy territory.

The USS Iwo Jima is named after the historic battle in 1945, which led to the awarding of 27 medals of honor, the most in history.

The ship is cruising to Mayport with the USS Fort McHenry to join the USS New York.
