Workshop for arming teachers planned in Nassau County

A workshop is planned on arming teachers in Nassau County.

Brande Baker said shootings are the one concern she has when she sends her kids to school.

“Terrifying, it’s hard to sleep at night. You worry about if your kids are going to be safe it they go to school," she said.

More Florida teachers are able to carry guns in the classroom under a bill signed by Governor Ron Desantis in early May.

The Nassau County School Board has a workshop on the issue set for June 13 at 5 p.m.

“This seems like a real safe community, but that’s when it happens – in real safe communities," Baker said.

In March 2018, Superintendent Kathy Burns told Action News Jax she’s against arming teachers.

Action News Jax’s Beth Rousseau called the superintendent Wednesday but didn’t hear back.

Ultimately, the school board will decide whether teachers are allowed to carry.

Rousseau reached out to every member of the board multiple times but didn’t get a single response.

Duval, Clay and St.Johns school districts said their teachers won’t have weapons.

Baker said she wants what’s safest for her kids.

“If they were trained, they had classes on doing it, I would feel safer,” she said.
