Broadway star Nick Cordero may require double lung transplant to overcome COVID-19 complications

Nick Cordero will likely require a double lung transplant to recover from the severe coronavirus complications he has endured, his wife told fans during a televised update on the Broadway star’s progress Thursday.

Amanda Kloots told “CBS This Morning” host Gayle King that a “lot of things would have to line up” for the transplant to proceed, but his progress to date has defied doctors’ expectations time and again, People reported.

“They told me four times that he won’t survive – sometimes even he won’t survive through the night – but he has. He’s fighting. I see it every day. Nick’s doctor sees it. And as long as he’s in there and fighting, I’ll continue to fight with him,” said Kloots, who shares 1-year-old son Elvis Eduardo with Cordero.

“I tell him every day before I leave, I say, ‘Okay, here’s what you have to focus on. The two of us sitting in our new house, ...Elvis is in bed and we’re listening to ‘Our House’ in our, you know, home in Laurel Canyon,” Kloots told King.

And the improvements, though incremental, have been miraculous, she said, noting Cordero is not only now COVID-negative but also out of a weeks-long coma, People reported.

Cordero, who was admitted to the hospital in late March with suspected pneumonia, spent three months in the intensive care unit. During that time, Cordero suffered lung infections and septic shock, had his right leg amputated and required a temporary pacemaker for his heart that has since been removed, CNN reported.

He is now “extremely weak” but “stable,” Kloots said.
