Clay County students prepare to head back to school next week

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — About 30,000 students will head back to school for in-person learning in Clay County on Tuesday.

On Friday, all incoming freshmen and new students were busy preparing for next week at Middleburg High School's orientation.

Parents like Misty Davis told us they’re nervous but have been counting down the days for school to start.

“Your son’s starting high school and just getting through the whole ordeal of finding all his classrooms so it’s a little crazy. But we’re super excited,” Davis said

New this year the Clay County School District has put in social distancing arrows in all their hallways to keep traffic flowing in one direction.

Middleburg High School does not have desk shields inside their classrooms, but it does always keep hand sanitizer out and available.

When it comes to attending games and sporting events inside the gym only 30% of fans will be allowed to sit on the bleachers. The high school put blue tape down where fans won’t be allowed to sit for social distancing.

Game day tickets will also be digital this year.

The Clay County School District says face mask are required for students in 3rd grade and up.

Kayla Whitehead and Elissa Whitmarsh cheer for Middleburg High School.

The high school seniors told me they can't wait be back inside the classroom.

"Yes! We both do full-time here, virtual was definitely challenging," Whitehead said.

“Being involved with friends and then getting it all taken away from you. it’s exciting to go back, get a new sense of kind of normal,” Whitmarsh said.

The district told us about 23% of students have chosen to go virtual including Cherry Green’s son.

“He has diabetes and his immune system, so his immune is compromised, and I just didn’t want to take a chance,” she said.

That's about 9,000 students that will be online next week.

The district says the deadline for selecting a learning option has passed.

If you need to make changes regarding learning options, the district recommends contacting the school to see if it’s available.
