First day of school in Clay County went smoothly despite a few hiccups, says superintendent

Clay County, Fla. — On Tuesday it was Clay County’s turn to welcome students back into public schools.

While 24 percent of its students learned from home.

Here’s what Superintendent David Broskie said went well.

“I thought one, transportation went really well. A couple of buses were a little bit behind but as far as years go, this is probably the best year in the last 10 years,” said Broskie.

When it came to those learning on the district’s virtual platform, there were a few hiccups.

“There’s always going to be little glitches. Little glitches are like ‘hey I forgot my password’, ‘how do I reset this’, ‘I can’t get onto this particular program’,” said Broskie.

Those glitches can be addressed in a short amount of time, he said.

Lakeside Jr. High School teacher Shannon Hube pointed out only one area of concern.

“Honestly the biggest hiccup was maybe lunch. All the kids got fed but it was the whole making sure that they were social distancing,” she said.

Hube said Wednesday lunch period went a lot smoother.

She’s not only a teacher in Clay County but her four kids also attend public schools there.

“Everyone was super happy when they came home yesterday,” said Hube.

Action News Jax asked Hube to grade how the first day of school went.

“I would definitely say an A-, B+, plus right in there,” said Hube.
